# Overview

**Product Categories** are the top-level category on the Trade Portal site. Product Types and all sub-categories link to Product Categories. 

Examples of Product Categories include:

- Kitchen
- Bathroom and Laundry
- Builders Hardware
- Building Materials
- Plumbing

The following is an example of where Product Categories are displayed on a test Trade Portal site, upon selecting 'Products':

- When adding a Product Category in ProStix, the category value must be unique, it must be no longer than 12 characters, and special characters should be avoided.
- When adding a Product Category Description in ProStix it must be no longer than 40 characters, and special characters should be avoided.
