# Overview

**ProStix Attributes** provide the ability to store additional information including extra customer contact details, marketing information and extra product information, either individually or via attribute sets. That is, the actual properties of a product based on chosen definitions. Put simply, attributes are user defined fields.
For example, paint may have a colour of red. Red is the attribute.

Attributes are defined in ProStix to create a global list of attributes (based on a customer's requirement) for use throughout ProStix, including Trade Portal.

The primary use of attributes in relation to the Trade Portal is for the storage of:

- Product Features & Benefits
- Extra Product Information
- Product Filtering

Attributes can be defined and added to products individually or, to reduce the amount of data entry required, sets of attributes can be defined and associated with a product class. When the attribute set changes, any product in the associated product class inherits the attribute changes. If a product is added to the product class it also inherits the definition of the attribute set.

When defined, attributes are given an attribute id and grouped by an attribute category. When attached to a particular product, attributes are then assigned an attribute value.

For example:

- An attribute category of 'Filter' could have attribute id's of Colour, Finish, Size, Brand and so on.
- An attribute id of 'Colour' could have attribute values of Red, Black, Blue and so on.
- An attribute set of 'Paint' could group together the attribute id's of Colour, Finish & Brand.
- The attribute set of 'Paint' could be associated to the product classes of Exterior Paint & Interior Paint

When importing Attribute Set definitions the import is broken into 2 components: **Attribute Set Headers** and **Attribute Set Detail lines**.

- **Attribute Set Headers** are the code and name of the Attribute Set.
- **Attribute Set Detail lines** are the Attributes within the Attribute Set.
