The maintenance of after-image files (which are a form of transaction log) allows Progress to roll forward from the last backup to the point at which database operation was interrupted. The objective of after-imaging (AI as it is also called) is to protect against loss or corruption of main database files in the case of server failure.  To implement after imaging, one or more extra hard disks would have to be installed so that in case of a hard disk crash, the after-imaging data is not lost.
