Add an attribute to a **Customer**, **Supplier**, **Product** or **Contact** to record additional information, such as extra contact details, marketing information or custom product properties, that can be used for reporting.

> 📝 ## Prerequisites
> 📝
> 📝 - The attribute's **Category** and **ID** are defined in Define Attributes.
> 📝 - Access to the **Attribute Maintenance** screen.
> 📝 - The **Customer**, **Supplier**, **Product** or **Contact** record you want to attach the attribute to already exists.

## Steps

1. Click the **Frameworks Menu** and navigate to **System Administration > System Setup > Configuration > Attribute Maintenance**.
2. From the **Type** drop-down menu, select **Customer**, **Supplier**, **Product** or **Contact**.
3. The field below the **Type** drop-down menu updates to match your selection: **Customer**, **Supplier**, **Product** or **Contact**. In this field, enter the name or ID of the record, or click the **Search** icon to open the **Finder** window and select the record. Leave the field blank to return all records of the selected type.
4. Click **Find** to update the results grid.
5. Click the **ID** hyperlink for the record to display its attribute details on the right of the screen.
6. Click **Add** to create a new attribute row, then complete the following fields:
  - **Category:** Enter the category the attribute sits under, or click the **Search** icon to open the **Attribute Category Finder** window.
  - **ID:** Enter the attribute ID, or click the **Search** icon to open the **Attribute Finder** window and select from the IDs defined for the selected category.
  - **Value:** Enter the value for the attribute, or click the **Search** icon to open the **Attribute Value Finder** window and select from the values defined for the selected ID.
7. Click **Save** to commit the changes.

## Result

The attribute is added to the selected **Customer**, **Supplier**, **Product** or **Contact** and appears in the **Attribute Maintenance Details** section. The attribute value is now available for use in reporting categories and reports for that record type.

> ℹ️ **Formatting attribute values:** The **Value** field supports HTML tags to control how the text displays wherever the attribute is used. For example, `<h2>` applies heading styling, `<br>` starts a new line, and `<b>` or `<i>` apply bold or italic formatting.

## Additional Notes

- When a product attribute is defined in a transaction-prompt category, attaching it to a product here causes the user to be prompted for the attribute when the product is added to a transaction. See [Product Attribute Capture - Overview](https://sterlandsupport.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FRAM/pages/894173186) for details.
