# Overview

This operator guide will help you to split quantities from one pack and create a new pack that contains the end sections that have been removed from the existing pack.

> ⚠️ To split a pack it needs to be in the status **In Stock.** Consignment packs cannot be split, they must be purchased first.

# How to Split a Timber Pack

To split a pack in Frameworks, perform the following:

1. Click the **Frameworks Menu**, then navigate to **Timber Packs > Pack Adjustments** from the navigation tree.
2. From the **Pack Adjustments** screen, in the **Num Pack** field, enter the timber pack number and click **Find** to search for the timber pack you want to split.
  1. The **Status** drop-down menu will default to **In Stock**. Leave it as this to only display packs in stock.

> ✅ Refer to [Pack Adjustments](https://sterlandsupport.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FRAM/pages/28401978) for more information about the Pack Adjustments screen.

3. From the search results, click the **Pack No.** hyperlink to select the appropriate timber pack you need to split.
4. On the **Split Pack** tab, in the pack adjustments section, verify that the **Pack to Split** and pack's **product details** are correct.
5. Under the **New Pack** section, in the **Pack Number** field, enter the pack number for the new timber pack or click **New Pack Number** to create the new pack number.

> ℹ️ Enable the **InvPakSplit **system flag to add a suffix to the original pack number. This helps groups related packs together and shows which packs came from the same parent pack.

6. You can enable the **Print New Labels** checkbox to print a label for the newly created timber pack. Then, specify the number of labels to be printed and choose the printer to be used.
7. In the **Qty to Split** column, enter the quantity you want to split for each length shown in the grid.
8. Click **Split Pack** to create the new pack with the quantities you specified in the Qty to Split column.

## What Happens When You Click Split Pack

The split operation creates stock movements recording the pack split transaction. The original pack's quantities decrease by the split amounts, and a new pack is created with the split quantities and the pack number you specified. Both packs maintain **In Stock** status and can be independently allocated to sales orders.

If validation fails, Frameworks displays an error message and no changes are made to either pack.

# Pack Split Validation Rules

Frameworks applies specific validation rules when splitting packs to maintain inventory accuracy and prevent errors. Understanding these rules helps you successfully complete pack split operations and avoid validation errors.

## Validation Rule 1: Single Length Splits Allowed

You can split the full quantity of a single length from a pack containing multiple lengths. This is useful when you want to create a pack containing only one specific length while leaving other lengths in the original pack.

> **Example**: A pack contains 10 pieces of 3.0m timber and 8 pieces of 4.2m timber. You can split all 10 pieces of the 3.0m length into a new pack, leaving the 8 pieces of 4.2m in the original pack.

## Validation Rule 2: Partial Quantity Splits Allowed

You can split partial quantities from any length in the pack. This allows flexible pack division where you move only some pieces of each length to create two packs with mixed lengths.

> **Example**: From a pack containing 10 pieces of 3.0m and 8 pieces of 4.2m timber, you can split 5 pieces of the 3.0m and 3 pieces of the 4.2m timber into a new pack, leaving 5 pieces of 3.0m and 5 pieces of 4.2m in the original pack.

## Validation Rule 3: Complete Pack Splits Not Allowed

You cannot split the entire contents of a pack, meaning you cannot move every piece of every length from the source pack. At least some quantity must remain in the original pack after the split operation.

If you attempt to split every piece of every length from a pack, Frameworks displays the validation message: "Cannot split entire quantity of product."

When this validation message appears:

- No stock changes occur and the split operation is cancelled automatically.
- The original pack remains unchanged with all its original quantities.

> **Business Reason**: This validation prevents inventory errors by ensuring at least one pack remains with stock after a split operation. If you need to move an entire pack to a different location or status, use Pack Maintenance or other pack movement functions rather than the split function.

# Length Validation and Surcharges

The TimVal and TimSurBrn system settings flags control length validation and surcharges for timber products. These settings affect pack splitting when products have length-specific rules configured at the product level.

- **TimVal** enables length validation for timber products, ensuring split quantities meet configured length requirements.
- **TimSurBrn** enables branch-specific length surcharges that may apply to timber products based on their lengths.

When these settings are enabled and products have length validation configured, Frameworks validates that split quantities comply with the product's length rules before allowing the split to complete.
