Copying an existing customer allows you to create a new customer record while retaining common settings such as payment terms, pricing structures, and account configurations from the original customer.

> 📝 ## Prerequisites
> 📝
> 📝 - Access to Customer Maintenance screen.
> 📝 - An existing customer record to copy from.
> 📝 - New customer details (customer name at minimum).

## Steps

1. Navigate to **Receivables > Maintenance > Customer Maintenance**.
2. In the **Search** field, enter part of the customer name or customer number you want to copy.
3. Click **Find** to display matching customers.
4. Click the customer record you want to copy.
5. Click **Copy**.
6. In the **Name** field, enter the new customer name.
7. Review and update all copied fields as required (refer to [Customer Maintenance](https://sterlandsupport.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FRAM/pages/28389894) for field details).
8. Click **Save**.

## Result

The new customer record is created with a unique customer number. The system copies settings from the original customer including payment terms, pricing groups, and account configurations. You can now create transactions for this customer.

If the **CusNumLock** system flag is disabled, the customer number defaults to the next sequential number but can be edited (maximum 6 digits). If the **CusNumLock** flag is enabled, the customer number is automatically assigned and cannot be edited.

Customer numbers must be unique. If you attempt to use an existing customer number, an error message displays: "*Customer Number already exists.*" Use a unique customer number.

## Additional Notes

> ⚠️ **Prevent customer number from being overwritten:** The system setting flag **CusNumLock** controls whether the customer number can be edited. When enabled, the customer number on the Customer Maintenance screen defaults to the next sequenced customer number and it cannot be edited. When disabled, the customer number on the Customer Maintenance screen defaults to the next sequenced customer number but it can be overridden or edited by the user.
> ⚠️
> ⚠️ **Mandatory customer purchase order numbers:** The system setting flag **FWManCusOr** activates custom formats for customer order numbers. When enabled, fields such as Order No., Unit No., Address, Name, and Job Number are used to make up the order number. Each field has specific requirements around length and input format as well as being optional or mandatory. These values must conform to the rules defined against each prompt. To configure these custom formats, refer to Order No. Rules in Customer Maintenance for further information. When disabled, custom formats for customer order numbers are not activated.
