# Overview

Sometimes certain products, for example rolls of cable, require multiple sku's to represent a parent (the roll) and the child (the lineal metre).

To manage stock control of these products, Product Maintenance contains the ability to introduce a parent-child relationship for products, whereby greater visibility is maintained between the parent stock and the child (the loose stock).

Create a Parent Product

The parent product is the primary item that represents the entire product and acts as a reference for its variations, such as a roll of cable showing the full length and packaging. To create a new product, follow the steps in [Creating a New Product](https://sterlandsupport.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/fwksproau/pages/30509628).

To classify whether a parent product is a tally or non-tally parent, the following configurations must be set:

- For Tally Parent Product, the** Length Tally** checkbox must be enabled in **Product Maintenance** > **Key Details**.
- For Non-tally Parent Product, **Independently Traded** must be enabled in **Product Maintenance** > **General Information**.

# Create a new Child Product

> ⚠️ The parent product and its associated child products should be measured using the same standard unit.

To create a new child product, perform the following:

1. From the **Frameworks Menu**, navigate to **Inventory** > **Maintenance** > **Product Maintenance**.
2. Locate the parent product you wish to create a child against, and navigate to the **Child Products** menu from the Options on the left side of the screen:

3. Click **Add**. The **New Child Product** popup screen is displayed.

<details>

For more information about the available fields in New Child Product window, click here.

**Child product** [Mandatory]

By default, the next available system value is populated. This can be overridden as long as it is a unique value.

---

**Barcode**

By default, the next available system value is populated. This can be overridden as long as it is a unique value.

---

**Product Description **[Mandatory]

Enter a description for the product.

---

**UOM**

By default, it is the same UOM as the parent product but can be changed. For example, the parent product is LM (Linear Meter) but Child product can be PE (piece of length).

> ⚠️ **Important:** To ensures accurate cost and sell pricing when trading child products that use a different unit of measure (e.g. PE for pieces), to its parent product (e.g. LM for Lineal meter). The **length entered on the child product becomes the conversion factor** for its base UOM.
> ⚠️
> ⚠️ **For Example:**
> ⚠️ If the parent is timber with a UOM of **LM**, and the child is defined in **PE** with a length of **5.4**, then **5.4 becomes the conversion factor** for the child’s base UOM.

---

**Length**

Enter the length of the child product.

> ℹ️ This field is required only when the parent product is a tally product and is only displayed for tally products.
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ In addition, when child products are created, the **Length Tally** is disabled by default, as the length is already specified for the child.

---

**Qty Per** [Mandatory]

Determines the conversion factor from the Parent to the Child product. The Parent 'Standard Cost' is divided by the 'Qty Per' value to determine the child product's Standard cost. Value cannot be '0'.

---

**Reset Standard Cost**

Enabled by default and cannot be changed until after saving the child product record. This sets the Standard cost of the new Child product based on the parent standard cost divided by the conversion factor (Qty Per *).

---

**Reset Supplier Cost**

Enabled by default and cannot be changed until after saving the child product record. This sets the Supplier cost of the new Child product based on the parent standard cost divided by the conversion factor (Qty Per *).

---

** Standard Cost**

This value is automatically calculated from the parent's **standard cost** (not supplier cost) divided by the value defined in **Qty Per** field. For tally products with different UOMs, the length becomes the conversion factor.

5. Click **Save/Close**.

> ✅ Branch costs are not recalculated with child products.

# Create Different Types of Parent Products

The table below shows how to set up different types of parent products in [Product Maintenance](https://sterlandsupport.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FRAM/pages/28378114) > **Key Details**.

> ✅ Refer to [Create a Parent Product](#) on how to create a parent product.

| **Type of Parent Product** | **Set up** |
| --- | --- |
| **Non-Tally Parent Product** | |
| Independently Traded Parent Product | Refer to [Create a Parent Product](https://sterlandsupport.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/CO/pages/30509486/Defining+Parent-Child+Products#create-parent-prod) on how to set this up.
> ℹ️ In sales and purchase orders, you can enter the parent product directly without selecting a specific child product. Please note that this will impact the stock levels of the parent product accordingly. |
| M2 Parent Product | **Length Tally** is disabled.
**Length** and **Width** must be provided. |
| M3 Parent Product | **Length Tally** is disabled.
**Length** and **Width** must be provided.
**Depth** is optional. |
| **Tally Parent Product** | |
| M2 Parent Product | **Length** Tally is enabled.
**Width** must be provided. |

# Link an existing product as a Child

Users can also link an existing product as a child product, using the same process as steps 1 through 3 above; however, when adding the child product to the parent, perform the following additional steps:

1. In the **Child Product **field use the search icon to search for an existing product that you wish to make a child product. Select the product ID.
2. Enter the Quantity per parent unit, if the same as the parent this will be '1'.

![image](media://4a4eb99a-3a52-4612-b92f-89f8470e6850)

3. You can reprice the child product by ticking the **reset standard cost** and/or **reset supplier cost.** This will reset the costs based on the parent's **standard cost** (not supplier cost unless using Preferred Supplier costing method) divided by the **Quantity per** entered.
4. Click "Save/Close" to link the child product to the parent.

> ⚠️ - When a pre-existing product becomes a child product, all other details besides the **cost** remain the same on that product.
> ⚠️ - You cannot link a child product if it already has a parent. One parent can have multiple children, but children can only have a single parent.

# View Child Products via the Product Dashboard

To view child products, go to the **Product Dashboard**. Use the **Search **option to find a product by ID or description. Click the hyperlink of your desired product, then select **Child Products** to see more details.

> ✅ Refer to [Product Dashboard](https://sterlandsupport.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FRAM/pages/28379182) for more information.

# Convert Parent - Child Products

The "Break Parent Product" function under **Inventory** > **Transaction Processing **converts parent products into their applicable child products. For example, a store may need to break a roll of copper wire into lm (lineal metre) once opened and partially sold.

To convert a parent into child products, perform the following:

1. From the "Break Parent Product" screen, search and select the parent product you wish to 'break'. The search results can be refined using the following search parameters:

![image](media://b0ea65bc-83e4-4412-9f4d-2aa2af73b354)

2. Click "Find" to display the search results.
3. Click on the Product ID hyperlink to display the child products on the right of the screen.
4. Select a child product you wish to break by clicking the **select** tick box:

![image](media://f19f60c4-9743-4de4-8b9d-ea50003c10a3)

5. Enter the **Break Quantity **of the parent product.
6. The Stock on Hand will be updated based on the formula** break number x qty per**

![image](media://7084a8f1-f029-47d3-b11a-34c3cde154d1)

So in this example the break qty of **2** x Qty per of **10** = 20. Therefore the SOH of the child product is increased from 20 to 40. The SOH of the Parent product is reduced by 2 from **8** to **6**.

To reverse a conversion, the user is able to enter a negative Qty value of the parent product and this will reduce the on hand balance of the child product. This may be required if the roll was incorrectly adjusted.

# Reprice Parent and Child Products

Where a parent product has had a change to supplier or standard costs, users can optionally choose to reprice the linked child product/s to match.

Under Key Details within the parent product, enable the option to reset child costs after repricing the parent. This will reprice the standard and supplier costs of the child product.

> ⚠️ Branch costs are not updated as part of this process.

![image](media://29699890-ff8a-4383-8343-2b59f14e5cca)

When the system flag **InvResetC** is ticked, child costs will automatically be inherited from the parent product.
